Long Beach

 

Located in Southern California, Long Beach CA is a major maritime center. Recently named the “Aquatic Capital of the Nation,” it exerts substantial influence on the global economy. It is the second busiest container port in the United States and one of the world’s largest shipping ports. The city also maintains a thriving oil industry, with both offshore and underground reserves. Additionally, Long Beach manufactures aircraft, car parts, and home furnishings. Long Beach is home to a diverse population. In 2000, the census revealed that about 30% of Long Beach residents were non-Hispanic whites. The city is home to the second-largest Cambodian population outside of Asia. The city also hosts large populations of Vietnamese and Filipino immigrants. The area also has an extensive Japanese community and Japanese-American Cultural Center.


For outdoor activities, Long Beach has a wide variety of parks. El Dorado East Regional Park is one of the largest parks near downtown and features a four-mile bike path, two stocked fishing lakes, and picnic shelters. Dog owners will enjoy the El Dorado Dog Park, while wildlife lovers will appreciate the Long Beach Nature Center.
According to the 2000 census, the city had a total of 163,088 households. Twenty-one percent of households were families, and sixty-seven percent were made up of two or more individuals. The median age of households was 31 years old, and there were 96.7% of single adults living in the city.
